Lieutenant Commander Data

viewview

The android Data snooping around engineering after hours looking for his Mr. Spot. Where art thou little kitty cat? Time for your milk and catnip.

Sketched this directly via Photoshop and colored it. It took about 2 hours to complete. I normally like to draw traditionally with a pencil onto paper and then scan it in, but decided on a whim to bypass that step. Anyways, I was watching an old episode on youtube after work and was prompted to do this painting. Star Trek The Next Generation rocks! Yes, I watch Star Trek and I'm proud of it.

Wyatt Berry Stapp Earp (1848-1929)

Wyatt Berry Stapp Earp was born on March 19th, 1848. He was a farmer, teamster, buffalo hunter, officer of the law in various Western frontier towns, miner, gambler and saloon-keeper. He is probably best known for his role in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, along with his buddy Doc Holliday.

Sketched it on 100% recycled Kraft stock with VERITHIN 756 Dark Burnt Umber for linework and Prisma PC938 Blanc for some highlights & colored via Photoshop. Took approximately 1.5 hours.

I hope you enjoy it!

Frederick Douglass (1818-1895)

Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey who would later be known as Frederick Douglass was born as a slave in Talbot County, Maryland. He was an American abolitionist, editor, author, orator, statesman and reformer. Frederick Douglass was one of the most influential lecturers and authors in American history. He was a firm believer in the equality of all people, whether black, female, American Indian, or recent immigrant and spent his life advocating the brotherhood of all humankind.

I sketched this last Saturday night on 100% recycled Kraft stock with a VERTHIN 756 Dark Umber for the linework and a Prisma PC938 Blanc for highlights. Coloring was done via Photoshop as usual. It took about 1 hour for the sketch and 30 minutes for the coloring. It was quick and spontaneous...just the way I like it!

Miyamoto Musashi (1584)

Miyamoto Musashi was born June 13th, 1584 and is considered by many to have been one of the most skilled swordsmen in history. The image is not a historically accurate portrayal of Musashi, but one with my own personal interpretation.

This was sketched about a month ago on a Saturday afternoon. I drew it in a sketchbook that was primed with tinted gesso. I had some time this afternoon to try and paint it. A 0.005 Pigma Micron by Sakura was used for the linework and then it was scanned into Photoshop for coloring. There was no creative direction to begin with, but it sort of developed into this illustrational slash graphical style with filler text for design aesthetics.

Layer modes such as overlay & multiply were utilized. A photoshop brush set called faux finish was used as well. The sketching took about an hour and the painting + graphic design took about 3 hours.

Hope you like it!

Bearing the Cross

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). To read the account in greater detail according to the apostle John's account, please click here to visit the BibleGateway site.

For this image I explored a few new brushes in Photoshop that I haven't used before and tried to create a sense of atmosphere and depth. As usual, I did a 2-3 minute rough sketch on kraft paper and had it scanned in. I tweaked and experimented with the layer blend modes as the color washes were added in. I wanted to keep it more towards a transparent feel and not too "thick" looking. It was looking too soft at the end so I decided to add some linework to top it off and give the foreground elements some definition.
